In 1948, over 750,000 Palestinians were made refugees in what became known as the Nakba (Catastrophe). Zionist terror gangs destroyed 530 villages, killing 15,000 Palestinians. 750,000 Palestinians were forced into exile from their homeland.
Ever since, Israel has continued to dispossess Palestinians, taking even more land. Today there are some 8 million Palestinian refugees and internally displaced persons unable to return to their original homes and villages. Many of those reside in Gaza.
Since last October, Israel has destroyed homes, schools, hospitals and whole towns in Gaza. The official death toll is over 36000, but tens of thousands more are presumed killed, lying beneath the rubble. This operation, like many before it, has one purpose: to drive the remaining Palestinians from their land.
In Refugee Week 2024, we rally to demand an end not just to the current genocide, but to the decades-long occupation that has made an entire people refugees in their own land.
What do we want?
• that the Australian government stop aiding and abetting the genocide in Gaza; that they cease all two-way arms exports with Israel, cut all diplomatic ties and enforce trade sanctions on Israel;
• that the Australian government grant visas to Palestinians seeking refuge, just at it offered to Ukrainians fleeing Russia’s invasion;
• that Israel end the suffocating siege on the people of Gaza and allow for aid to enter the Gaza Strip.
• Ultimately, we demand the right of the Palestinians to return to their lands, to be supported to rebuild their homes, infrastructure and their livelihoods.
The injustice which the Palestinian people have been subjected to is a scar on the face of humanity and it’s time for the world to wake up and hold Israel accountable .
